Registration and Eligibility

How can I register for classes?

You can register online at sanfordlearns.org, by phone (207-490-5145), by mail, or in person. Payment is due at the time of registration.

Can I register online or by phone?

Yes. Online registration accepts all major credit cards. Phone registration is also available (207-490-5145), accepting Visa, MasterCard, and Discover.

Do I need to live in Sanford to attend?

No. We welcome residents of Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and their guests.

Can high school students take adult education classes?

You must be at least 17 and out of high school. If you’re 16, you need permission from the Superintendent.

Payments and Fees

How can I pay for classes?

What is the difference between course fees and material fees?

Course fees cover program costs. Some classes (e.g., cooking, art) have extra material fees paid directly to the instructor at the first class.

HiSET (High School Equivalency Test)

How much does the HiSET cost?

  • Maine residents: Free

  • Non-residents:

    • Full battery: $150

    • Individual subtest: $45 each (initial or retake)
      All fees are due at scheduling and can be paid by cash, card, or money order.

Where can I access HiSET study resources and help?

Cancellations, Refunds, and Class Availability

 

What is the refund policy?
Full refunds are given if a class is canceled or if you withdraw at least two business days before it starts. No refunds after a class begins or for trips after the deadline. Processing takes 2–3 weeks.

 

How will I know if a class is full or canceled?
Online listings will state “Course full.” If you register by mail and the class is full, we’ll contact you. Waiting lists are first-come, first-served.

 

Should I attend if I’m on a waitlist?
No. Only come if you are contacted and offered a spot.

 

What happens during bad weather?
Class cancellations are announced on our answering machine, website, and local news. If day school is canceled or dismissed early, adult ed classes are also canceled. Call 207-490-5145 if unsure.

How much does the HiSET(GED) cost?

If you are a resident of the state of Maine, there is no charge for the HiSET (High School Equivalency Test).

If you are a non-resident of Maine:

Battery: You must pay a total fee of $150. If you pay for the battery and need to retest on an individual subtest, you must pay the $30 state administration retesting fee per subtest. All test fees are paid at the local test center and are due to the test center at time of scheduling. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, credit/debit card and money order.

Individual Subtest: If you only need to take an individual subtest initially, the total price is $45 per test. If you must retake an individual subtest, you must pay a total fee of $45 per retest. All test fees are due at time of scheduling. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, credit/debit card and money order.
